Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the United States. She has worked as an editor since the year 1995. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency a website that includes videos and comments on depictions of women's roles in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic and blogger. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in the pop culture. Destroying stereotypes about women are her main focus. In addition, Sarkeesian highlights issues related to specifically targeted harassment online against women as well as other communities that have been left out. Sarkeesian holds a bachelor's degree in political thought and social theory at York University. She is also a highly-respected public speaking. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group. Since her early years she was intrigued by issues of gender identity as well as feminist ideas. When she was still in school, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency Website. She had a plan to create an online series that examined the gender roles in games however, she was also the subject of an online campaign to harass her. But the harassment did not discourage her. The experience only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards in recognition of her many prominent contributions to the field of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization which studies the portrayals of women in popular culture stories.
